This lecture will describe how understanding the microplastic response of magnesium and its alloys may contribute to shed light on their macroscopic mechanical behavior. Analysis of microplasticity comprises here a qualitative estimation of the relative activity of different slip systems (basal, prismatic, pyramidal) by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) assisted slip trace analysis, as well as an exhaustive characterization of twinning. The macroscopic phenomena that will be scrutinized using this methodology include the twinning to slip transition with decreasing grain size, increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate, the reverse yield asymmetry, and the poor precipitation strengthening reported for most alloys. This body of work will yield fundamental guidelines for the design of more isotropic and stronger magnesium alloys.
