Selective laser melting (SLM) is a sustainable manufacturing of complex shaped and functionalised components of Ti-alloys quicker with less material waste. However, due to the melting and solidification dynamics of the materials, the as built SLM components using the gas atomised and pre-alloyed Ti-6Al-4V powder usually showed big columnar grains and pores. The directionality of the microstructure affects the mechanical properties, fracture mechanisms and crack propagation. Post-printed processes, e.g. hot isostatic pressing and heat treatment, are often needed to reduce the as built deficiencies such as pores and thermal stress which adding up the manufacturing cost. The Ti-6Al-4V has been functionalised with ceramic powder. The addition of small amount of ceramic powder changed the solidification behaviour, the functionalised powder enables the as-built SLM samples compose equiaxed prior beta grains with fine alpha. Microstructure evolution of the as built SLM parts has been investigated using SEM, EBSD and TEM.
