Investigation of the Solution Heat Treatment Process for HFQ® Forming of 6xxx Aluminium Alloy

Wednesday (06.11.2019)
11:25 - 11:45
Part of:

An advanced forming technology, HFQ® (Hot-Form-Quench) is being used on commercial 6xxx materials for automotive applications. By utilising the HFQ process, automotive alloys can be made lighter weight and with a fewer number of components for the same application than current aluminium or steel alloys. An investigation of the solution heat treatment on the microstructure of a 6xxx Al alloy has been conducted. The solution of the constituent Mg2Si phase is measured using electrical conductivity (EC), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The grain microstructure of the HFQ processed component has also been characterised via optical microscopy and SEM post-HFQ.
