The correlation between hardness descriptors on the micro scale and tensile test results on macro scale for evolutionary material development of aluminium alloys

A novel method for evolutionary material development using high-throughput methods on spherical samples is established. For this high-throughput application, spherical microsamples of different alloys will be produced in droplet generators using single-droplet technology. These samples are tested using rapid characterization methods based on physical test methods such as calorimetry and universal microhardness measurements. The results of these measurements are called descriptors. Subsequently, the microstructure states obtained and the associated microproperties are characterized, upscaled to the macro level and evaluated. Through machine learning and heuristic methods, the experimental plans are refined and the experimental procedure is continued until the novel material with the desired properties is finally found.

In this presentation the correlation between the results of the microhardness of micro samples made of a hardenable aluminium alloy EN-AW6083, the hardness of the macro samples and the tensile properties will be presented. Furthermore, the comparability of the different heat treatment states of micro and macro samples will be discussed.
