Dissolution and Precipitation Behaviour during Continuous Heating of Mg-Y-RE Alloy WE43

In the present study, the dissolution and precipitation behaviour of Mg-alloy WE43 in three different initial heat treatment conditions (T4, T6, as quenched) was investigated during heating by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). With regard to the accessible temperature range, reference materials and dynamic range, the state of the art for DSC has been improved with respect to Mg alloys. Heating rates were studied from 0.01 up to 3 K/s and temperatures up to 540 °C. A sequence of several dissolution and precipitation reactions could be observed during heating. Start temperatures and intensities of the reactions depend on heating rates. Based on the DSC results, samples from characteristic heating temperatures (140, 250, 310, 330 and 460 °C) were quenched and analysed by SEM.
